On February 22, 2022, a rare coincidence took hold of the internet. The date read 22/2/22. Its digits mirrored themselves. It fell on a Tuesday. People called it Twosday.

An on-chain conceptual artwork called Catch-22 was built around that moment: 222 NFTs, a smart contract and a permanent public record.

At the instant the contract entered Ethereum, Los Angeles still had hours of Tuesday left. Chicago had minutes. In New York, London, Paris and Tokyo, Tuesday had already become Wednesday.

Every clock was correct. Every location described the same instant. The chain supplied one exact second; the world supplied two calendar dates.

A date does not appear everywhere at once. It travels through the time zones. Because civil offsets span more than twenty-four hours, the earliest places begin leaving a date before the latest places have fully entered it.

WHY THIS DATE
WAS RARE.

“Twosday” was not one coincidence. It was several systems locking together: number, notation, symmetry, weekday and word.

In day–month–year notation, 22/2/22 contained only twos. In month–day–year notation, 2/22/22 did the same. Written as 22/02/2022, the digits formed a palindrome. Then February 22 fell on a Tuesday. The sequence found its matching sound.

The compressed numerical pattern returns in 2122, but February 22, 2122 falls on a Sunday. Under the Gregorian calendar, February 22 does not fall on a Tuesday again until 2422. Using the two-digit year, the number–weekday–word alignment returns four hundred years later.

THE CONVENIENCE OF “NOW”LIVE / TODAY / NOW

THE INTERFACE
HIDES THE SPLIT.

Networked media make simultaneity feel ordinary. A livestream is simply “live.” A notification says “today.” A feed says “now.” Behind the interface, servers continuously translate one timestamp into many local times.

The translations disappear. The result feels like one common present. But Twosday was not one simultaneous global day. It was a sequence of local days moving westward around the planet.

The cultural date and the protocol timestamp

Ethereum does not know that February 22 looks unusual. At protocol level, a date made almost entirely of twos is no different from any other Tuesday. Blocks are ordered. Timestamps are attached. Human interfaces later translate the integer into a calendar.

The same instant crossed every city below. Nothing disagreed. Yet between Chicago and New York, Twosday vanished.

Move east and something disappears. The Americas still possessed the twos and the Tuesday. Europe and Asia had already lost both. The deployment was locally right and globally impossible.

Choosing another hour would only redraw the boundary. No globally correct instant was waiting to be found.

A blockchain is not a global calendar. It is a method for agreeing about sequence. Distributed participants can establish that one event belongs before another and inspect the same record later.

What emerges is not one global present. It is a common history assembled across distance. The ledger can create a shared past. It cannot create the same Tuesday for everyone at once.

Catch-22 consists of 222 on-chain tokens accompanied by bright generative images. At first they resemble the celebratory surface of NFT culture around 2021–22: rarity, immutability, uniqueness, confetti.

Then the project describes those images in a sentence that changes the entire reading.

If the images are placeholders, significance moves elsewhere: toward the contract, the fixed supply, the deployment, the block and the public record. The infrastructure moves into the foreground.

Conceptual art has long treated dates, instructions, certificates and systems as material. On-chain art can extend that field into contract execution, block order, wallet relations and timestamps. Here, the timestamp no longer sits outside the artwork as administration. It begins to participate.

THE DATE BECOMES MATERIAL.

The protocol did not invent the impossibility of a global Twosday. Civil time already contained it. The protocol gave that impossibility a permanent inscription.

The first rarity is deliberate: there are 222 tokens because the contract says there are 222. Code establishes the limit.

The second rarity is historical: the attention surrounding Twosday, the NFT culture of 2022, this deployment, this block and this instant in which one part of the world still occupied the coincidence while another had already left it.

The code can be copied. The supply can be rebuilt. This configuration happened once.
